How to simplify a parent’s smartphone so it’s easier to use
Most “I can’t use my phone” frustration isn’t about the person — it’s a cluttered screen, tiny text, and a steady stream of pop-ups nobody asked for. The good news: almost all of it is fixable, usually in about an hour. Here’s how to declutter the phone they already own so the daily “how do I…” calls drop off.
Before you start: a few gentle ground rules
- Do it with them, not at them — narrate each change so the phone stays familiar.
- Change one thing at a time. A dozen changes at once is its own kind of overwhelm.
- You shouldn’t need their password to do most of this — and never ask them to hand it over. (More on staying scam-safe below.)

The hour-long cleanup, step by step

Make everything bigger and easier to read
Turn on larger, bold text and bigger app icons, and raise the brightness so nothing requires squinting.

Clean up the home screen
Keep the 6–8 apps they actually use on the first screen, move the rest out of sight, and delete the ones that only cause confusion.

Quiet the noise
Turn off pointless notifications, red badges, and pop-ups so the phone stops feeling alarming or demanding.

Prevent accidental trouble
Use a simpler unlock, reduce accidental taps, and gently limit surprise in-app purchases or new downloads.

Set up the safety nets
Add emergency contacts, fill in the Medical ID / emergency info, make the ringer louder, and note a trusted person in case of a lockout.

Write down a one-page cheat sheet
List their key apps and the simple steps for each, and keep it somewhere they will actually find it.
A note on the home screen
Ask your parent which apps they truly use: phone, messages, the camera, maybe weather, the bank, and a favorite game. Put those — and only those — on the first screen, large and clearly labeled. Everything else can be tucked into a folder or moved off the front page. A calm first screen is the single biggest reason the daily confusion fades.
A note on “trap” apps
Some apps exist only to nag — endless notifications, ads that look like buttons, or pop-ups urging an upgrade. If an app causes more frustration than it’s worth and your parent doesn’t need it, it’s perfectly fine to remove it. You can always reinstall later. Removing one or two of these often quiets the phone more than any setting.
The safety nets that buy everyone peace of mind
A few small setups make a big difference if something ever goes wrong:
- Emergency contacts — add the people who should be reached first, and turn on the phone’s emergency-info screen so first responders can see it even when the phone is locked.
- Medical ID / emergency info — a short note of medications, allergies, and a contact, viewable from the lock screen.
- A louder ringer and vibration — so calls and texts don’t get missed.
- A trusted person on file — write down who can help if the phone ever gets locked, so a forgotten passcode isn’t a crisis.
Finish with a one-page cheat sheet
When you’re done, write down the handful of things your parent does most — “To text a photo, tap here, then here” — in big, plain words on a single page. Tape it inside a kitchen cabinet or keep it by the phone. It turns most “how do I…” questions into something they can answer themselves, which is the whole point. A written page after every change is something we leave behind on every visit, too.
